FEE SHARK ATTACK!

Good Morning everyone - Wow, have to say that it has certainly been a few days since I have been able to get online and do what I love to do best - write. To my fellow readers, and to my newest readers who are just coming on board with my blog, I have gone back to work part-time. It is usually three to four days a week and my total hours on the days I do work, are usually five to seven. All in all, I'm getting somewhat used to standing up for a rather lengthy time frame, but I feel it when the day is done. Ouch my bones and I am so missing my office chair. *wink* Ok, so back to my saga of the morning.

During the month of January, 2013, I wrote a story, that I have been getting a lot of responses to, that was called - "Beware of banking fee snowball effect,"

It is sad to find out how many more souls are dealing with this same issue and I was even more surprise by how many shared with me that they had the same bank. Now it has been a few months, and just when I thought it was safe to go back into the water.... (Wait for it - Hit link for sound effect) -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCfWHqrYUqo- the mystery overdraft fee shark attacked my account again.  Now granted, my account with M&T is not my primary checking, it is merely an account required by the bank so that my husband has the option of cashing his check completely if he chooses too, but 9 out of 10 times, he make a deposit and pays for auto payments and basic needs.

So this morning, once again, the bank has charged us an overdraft fee. Please tell me - do you see where I was over drawn on this bank statement????

As you can see, the deposit went in, and then was followed by the debits being removed - yet suddenly it hits me - the last time this happened, it was also a charge because of a State farm ACH, but hasn't happened since January and has me pondering "Could it be someone thinks I've stopped looking closely at my account? Or maybe they miss my happy face parked at the desk bitching about another invisiable overdraft." I understand that in this day and age, everyone is hurting to get that might dollar - even big businesses. I do understand the policy when it comes to implementing fees for overdrafts, but like the old rule, show me proof, by showing in on the statement and I'll walk away. Having it in print on a customers statement would give the bank solid ground to stand on, not just a customer service representative giving you this song and dance about timing. If they based all banking on timing, and a million people had this happen...well you do the math. All I can say is that if I'm being told I was overdrawn and being charged the fee - the statement better indicate a negative balance!  I want thank all of you that wrote to me on this topic. I feel bad that some of you were not aware this was happening until you balanced your ledgers at the end of each month and could not get it reversed.  I totally agree with you when you say - it is important that when you see this, you act immediately and not wait. I bet you'll know where I'll be at nine o'clock this morning - if you guessed getting the fee reversed - you guessed right.

 ***
I would also like to reply to one of the emails that I received from Leeann, in Pheonix, Arizona. Leeann, I do agree with you that our world  is in constant change and not always for the better.  We find ourselves having to be more in tuned as to the goings on with government, society, community, family, and what is within ourselves and no matter how much we yell and scream for change...more often than not - the people go unheard. We can't stop just because someone doesn't hear us. If we stand back and allow another voice to speak on our behalf, without our input, the outcome may not be what you hoped for. On the other hand, not all change is good change. It all depends on each individuals person's belief and how they feel, whatever the change may be, and how it would effect them.

Yes, I know this topic today is about bank fees, but Leeann brings to the topic a valid point on our global societies as whole and makes one take a second look around; In this day and age it's more than just bank fees. Every day the envelope is being pushed, and if we don't step up and say NO as a united group...this craziness is only going to multiply at our expense and a heavier price will be paid in the end. I get it, that it won't get corrected overnight, and the battles get overwhelming. Citizens are feeling bruised and broken and many feel like all they want to do is run away to the comforts of simple times. I will admit, I feel the very same way somedays and I find that for myself, for many years I was doing a lot of running away. Today I look back on my life when I battled Hodgkin’s disease in 1994 and was told by government doctors that I going to die - I had a Hell No Attitude to beat the disease, but failed everywhere else.  I realize things take time and I tell myself everyday - NEVER GIVE UP! Easier said than done. We as citizens must never give up even if it means fighting a bank fee that was imposed on us, atleast we are starting some where. Right? Wrong? Everyone's has an opinion and I get that some may or may not agree with us Leeann, it happens.  Mom always told me to pick my battles, but sometimes the battle picks us when we least expect it.

My quote of the day -
"When life gives you lemons, make orange juice and give people a mysterious grin when they ask you how did you do that."

Self-Publishing Scares Author from Bantam Books- Really?

Well we have made it to end of another work week and here it is, Saturday morning and I am wide awake at 5:15am.  I will say that this week has been exceptionally busy, I've had two job interviews, and I’m doing final book edits to make sure that this book due out will be without any blemishes and doing my motherly/wifely duties to keep the home fires burning.

You know, speaking of books and publishing, I had the oddest thing happen to me yesterday. I was speaking with a gentleman, who has been published by Bantam Books, on line in regards to traditional publishers and authors that fear those who self-publish, that they will be the new way of publishing because of all they have to go through to get their stories to the shelves. Their strength will grow in numbers because of what they will learn in the industry. Hummm??? I can't see how, the crap that an author of a self-published book goes through it mind bending, stressful and the author is generally the one that does the writing, checking, re-checking, web page building, cover designing, book signing scheduling, oh and we can't forgot the ever dreaded marketing, that in itself is a pain in the royal butt. And if you think the marketing part is bad, let’s not forget about the costs that come out of your pocket. Ouch!

A traditional publisher, you write your query, you send it in with a few chapters of your story, if they like it you sign a contract - then you wait for them, they don't have to wait for you, they do the marketing, they set up the book signings, they edit the heck out of it and do whatever tweaking is needed to be done Etc.. Etc.   So my question is - What the heck is the problem? All that comes to mind is the first two lines of the song - "Slow Ride by Foghat"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcCNcgoyG_0 (smile, this song was a song that a band played at the Adak talent show I speak about in my book. You will find it in Chapter 19.  Nothing like rockin out with a cup of coffee so early on a Saturday morning - Hope I don't wake the kids. Bigger Smile) Ok, I'm sure it's not that simple, but the concept is very appealing to me vs. having the control and all the headaches that come with it when you publish on your own.

I'd love to be one of the authors who have had the pleasure of finding a publisher that didn't want to always change things or talk money constantly. The first time a publisher was interested in my work the very first thing they mentioned was that I had to sign over my rights to it, meaning, they could change and do what they wanted to my story and my cover so that it would be appealing to a large group of readers. I immediately was shocked - I wasn't upset over the possible cover change comment, but how can a company sit there and say they wanted to change some of the writing in my story. All I heard was that they want to change my life to please the readers? You can't and I won't be dishonest for the sake of making money, or for any other reason. The things in my book are my life experiences. I also chose not to write with forty dollar words that you would have to look up every time you turn a page. It didn't mean that I don't have a large vocabulary, I just wanted people to feel like they were walking beside me and seeing through my words that with the good came the bad and I'm proud to still be on this earth to tell it. In one short sentence to describe my thoughts behind my writing my first book - I just wanted to be me, not someone’s dancing chicken.

They didn't like that and so the deal was dead. I decided that I wasn't going to stop there. I self-published and very proud of myself that I did. Funny thing, now I am getting calls that publishers are interested in my Fictional book that I have completed titled "Deemed Crazy", yes it is edgy, yes much of the story was inspired by things and people that have crossed my path throughout my life, but then the fun came in when I got to write freely, and why? It's a work of Fiction - A mystery, suspense, hang on the edge of your seat thriller. (And no animals where physically hurt while writing this story - You'll have to read the book to understand that statement) With my newest writing adventure, I guess I can see why I don't have a problem with signing with an actual publisher and forgoing the self-publishing world is that "Deemed Crazy" is all fiction, but could, in some sick way,  really happen and I don't have this moral obligation to stay true to my story, as I did with my personal story of my life "Through the Barracks Window: A Time of Waves." Everyone has a story to tell. My first story was originally written and I only wanted just a few copies to be printed for my family. I never had any intentions of selling it to the world or trying to be rich.  It was the uplifting words from Mr. Webber, that inspired me to publish it for the public which in turn led to my quest to raise funding and awareness for Veterans who suffer the from "Gulf War Illnesses."

As for my next publication - it's going to be a wild ride and I'm ready for the challenge. Coming soon to a Book Shelf, Kindle, Nook, near you....
"Deemed Crazy" If you could get away with committing the ultimate crime of revenge - would you

Hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy yourselves to the fullest. Until next time - Blog ya later Alligators.

THE CALL THAT STOPPED THE CLUTTER CLEAN

THE CALL THAT STOPPED THE CLUTTER CLEAN

Let me start by saying, that no matter how much clutter I am faced to organize each day, my family will always come first if they need me, my ears, my advice, a hug, my help...you name it, I am there for them good or bad. So where do I start...Oh, I remember, It started out as any normal day would yesterday morning. I have been doing great with keeping up on putting things back in their rightful places. But have you ever had a situation when putting something back in their rightful place was a person? I know odd comment but I’ll explain soon. So, let’s begin today, with my philo that I believe to be fact. Life has a way of tripping you up, but if you’re prepared the outcome can be harmonious and life changing.
Yesterday I began my long to-do list, as I always do on Thursdays.  I have appointed Thursday as my day to leave the house early in the morning to get everything I need tended to that is out of the home.  My list included but was not limited to, taking the boy's to school, getting base stickers for both of our trucks, pick up prescriptions, get lab work done and go to the commissary. All of this accomplished before 10:00 am. I was feeling great that I had done so much in the course of three hours, I wanted to do something extra special for my honey.
My husband has been working at a job that is just around the corner from our home, which is very nice, because I can stop in quickly to drop off something special. I make his  lunch every day, but I know that the same ole sandwich and chips gets boring. I try to switch up his food choices so that it’s a surprise when he sits down to eat. My plan yesterday was to drop him off his favorite candy, but as I pulled up to the job site, clearly something was wrong and had totally disrupted his day. I had not seen that pale look on his face since the doctors told me I had cancer. Immediately my mind was rushed bad images, because I had forgotten my cellphone at home and maybe I missed an important call.
His body language was frightening and I knew I had to stay calm to help keep the situation contained. I had asked if something had happened on the job, to which he replied no. I asked if he was feeling OK, and again, he replied no. So I knew something was upsetting him and asked him flat out, what was wrong. He had indicated that he had gotten a call from home and went on say and I quote “The doctors said there was nothing more they could do for my mom, and she is going downhill fast”. Now what would you think if you hear those words? Get your airline tickets? Make arrangements to take the family home? If it didn’t come from mom or dad directly…call home and find out if it was true?
All of those things entered my brain, and I was ready to have the whole family on a plane to be with his mother today. Yet, then my mind stopped in its tracks and I was forced to ask the one question I already had the answer too. “Who called and told you this?” I was not surprised when he told me who. The Drama Queen strikes again. I assured him that I didn’t feel the situation was as grave as he was thinking and told him I would call home myself to get an update. He assured me that he would call home, but there was no way that I was going to let him work with the heavy machinery that he operates, under that type of worry and stress. I’m glad I went with my gut instinct and I made that call as soon as I got home.
I was unable to get through the first couple of tries, but was finally successful and how shocked I was to hear this upbeat full of life voice on the phone. Instantly my fears subsided when she said that for the most part, in spite of all that she has been through, she was fine. I have to say, his mom has seen her share of medical challenges and keeps on truckin’. We laughed and joked on the phone for more than a half an hour. She shared with me the changes in her medical status, and what the next steps were. She has MS, and not all patients with this disease have the same treatment outcome. They just haven’t found the best regiment that meets all her needs. She had shared with me what the next course of treatment would be and to lighten the mood I was instructed to share with my husband that “Mom is fine and that he needs to realize that she was going to be around a long time to bug him.”
Now clearly the way that my husband had stated what her condition was, would have led you to believe she was about to take her last breath. I felt bad, but I had even told my husband before I left, that I didn’t believe this situation was all truth and that it was another one of those, feel bad for me the sky is falling moments. He was mad at my comment, but that quickly changed about an hour later. Going on, my husband is a nice guy, will do anything for anyone, and takes people at their word. But the one thing about this good hearted man...He hates a liar." He gets mad when I keep bring up that people these days have this great ability to stretch the truth.  I’m told I am over reacting, but today was the turning moment when I called him back and updated him. I sensed his anger and this time it wasn’t towards me. Phew! I through sure he was going to be mad that I made the call that he told me not to. He is very aware that his mom is going through a lot, and he worries about her every day. The problem with this is that my husband has gotten this type of urgent call like clockwork for the past 12 years, putting this strong woman on her death bed. SAD! I take notice when something becomes repetitive and these types of calls are hard on my husband which in turn affects the whole family. Which has me thinking that the caller didn't completely listen to the news they had gotten at home and paniced or that are treading along the lines of intentional and could be viewed as a form of emotional abuse to make him feel guilty that he has not moved back home to be with his family more.
This is another reason why I dislike cell phones more and more. This whole situation could have waited until after working hours. People need to get the clue that, his boss can’t stress it enough at his place of employment…NO PERSONAL CALLS ON HIS (THE BOSSES) TIME! And I don’t blame him in the least. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen, when I was working, abuse the use of personal calls during working hours. Now don’t get me wrong, my husband doesn’t get nearly the calls that he used to and I will admit I’ve called my husband at work…and that is the two key words (My husband). Yet even being married to him, I don’t abuse the phone. Once in a great while I am following up to see how he was feeling, if I knew he had left the house not feeling his best. I try to make sure that he has headache and sinus meds with him. I may also call just to update him on a change in plans with the boys. But for the most part, I let him call me, but don’t wait by the phone expecting it. If he does call from work it is usually only on days when he will have breaks, or in a pause status as he waiting for the next part of a project to begin. But you’ll never see me calling and talking for 35 minutes on the bosses time.
By the end of the day, I didn’t know how he had faired the emotional storm, but was so happy when he came in the front door smiling and grabbed the house phone and said he was calling his mom back. I was again relieved to hear that he called her directly. Thank God!  He had been talking with his mother on the phone, on his way home from work when his battery died. He immediately called her back and the two of them had a wonderful conversation. I stepped out of the room to give him some privacy, but I couldn't help but over hear his laughter that filled every room of our home while he spoke.

When his call was over, We both agreed that he needed to call his mother and father directly and weekly. That if he didn't and something happened to them, he would never forgive himself. That he needed to build his bond with them, even if over the phone for now, until we finally get out west before our retirement years. That what they talk about should be kept between them, so that it would be their special time unless someone indicates that something they said was ok to tell others. I feel that it is very important that he keeps in constant contact with them as their son, and should share with them what is going on in his life first hand and vise-versa. I am also doing the same as their daughter-in-law and that I truly have enjoyed getting to know them again and I have made it very clear that they will be informed if something bad happens here. That they will hear it directly from us so that there are no questions. By making these changes in our lives , we anticipate that the dramatic episodes and third person miss information will reduce, with quickness – we can only hope.

So in analyzing my extreme procrastination, I have found that I must take each life situation and take the information in, review it rather than react to it by, either sleeping on it or address it. After that file it away, and get back to my cleaning this house out. Or if all else fails...write a book about it or blog it.  Now I think you will be surprise, and I will not let myself be embarrased to openly admit that I have found an organizer that is willing to work with me pro-bono. Her request is to get the big stuff either put in its place or thrown away, and then she will come in to work on the little things with me. I’m excited. I can only hope she will also help me to stay on track when things happen unexpectedly. I should have my progress photos up soon. I’m hoping later tonight, but I am also writing a story for a contest that is due in next Tuesday. UGGH! (Smile). My plate is full, but I'm energized and have graduated from the speed of snail to a turtles pace. Have a great weekend everyone! Thanks for reading.

The Dieters Nightmare

Fun with Food and Fiction
Written by Stacey L. Bolin

Revised, Thursday August 11, 2011

The darkness of the grocery store wrapped around me, my feet, cold, as I walked barefoot across the tiled floor. There was not a soul to be found.  I was all alone. The air felt think and heavy with moisture as I tried to control the fear in my breathing. I kept moving forward, following the unknown sounds. In my mind, I was on the verge of remembering, but the images would not come to me. The sounds - familiar. Snapping, popping, and at times....munching, followed by the distant sound of thunder. I continued to move forward with mixed emotions,
"What was it? Why did this all feel so familiar to me? Why was I scared? What was down there waiting for me?"
As I got closer to the sounds, I began to hear whispers, saying my name over and over. "Stacey, come to us, we're over here. Come to us."
Suddenly a bright light shown over me and I was surrounded, but surrounded by what? When I looked down, I couldn't believe what I was seeing,
"Say it wasn't so" I thought.
I was surrounded by hundreds of fruits and vegetables from isle one, they were trying to keep me from making that last fateful step into isle six - The Snack Zone. The chips and cookies were threatening to spoil any fruit or vegetable that got in their way. It was a fight between good and bad.
Trembling and confused I screamed out, "What do I do?"
I only had to ask this question once, for I knew the answer - "Will power, I was going to be good."
I then leaned down and picked up a red delicious apple, then took a bite to make the fear and the cravings for chewy, sugary, chocolaty, high calorie, bad for me and my backside, snacks, quickly go away. Yes, I had done it. I had made the right decision.
Now I am not sure, but I think I heard the apple scream out..."Save yourselves! Go back to produce!  this gal is HUNGRY!"
When I finally woke up, I was still in my bed with no signs that I had raided the snack cabinet in our kitchen.  Phew! I was safe from that Supermarket horror and intense cravings, but how long will it last? I wonder?

Honesty is the Best Policy

A readers question to me after reading my book.

This was originally posted by Stacey Bolin on Monday, July 25, 2011 at 9:39pm on my Facebook page for:
Through The Barracks Window - A Time Of Waves Author: Stacey L. Bolin
So, one day I was asked by a reader of my book...what made you change? To know me about 6 months ago, I was extremely heavy in weight. I can openly say I was depressed, had been for years. But now I am realizing that I need to thank God for unanswered prayers. I'm now able to see both the good and unfortunately the bad in situations and OK, yes, people too. So, to answer the question what made me change. Here is the biggest reason. My unconditional love for the three most important men in my life.  Ron, My husband of 19 years and my two miracles My oldest son Ryan and my youngest son Reese.
My second reason as I sit here this morning, with many questions on the mind, begins and ends with a question. Have you ever been living your life and one day you suddenly wake up?  I mean, wake up to a completely too new way of thinking, doing, speaking? 15 years ago I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease while in the military. I overcame it but in my mind, the excessive behavior to learn to cope was endless when the military retired me. People knew me, but they didn't know me.
I wrote a book that took 22 years clearly illustrating what I had been through and how I had to repeatedly overcome the odds. It was only this April while doing edits and spell checks, I finally faced my denial. Yes I am Stacey Bolin and I had cancer. Wow, it was a lot to finally say those words. Now... I am a survivor.
In all this realization I discovered a strange thing, this book was not only for me. It was also for my military family that have too, been faced with unwanted life altering challenges.  We now live in a world were we have television reality, but there’s a bigger reality that is being overlooked besides our failing economy. So many military members come home; needing complete mental and physical support, but for some reason, when the cameras are no longer around and the story no longer keeps it's ratings in the Neilsen reports, the help they need quickly falls apart.  Many have done what I did when faced with stress, they let their lives get so extreme, you honestly believe you know what is best for yourself.  This way of life can become dangerous and - Deadly.
I want to make a difference. I decided the book I wrote and as you can see below, has been published. This was the therapy I needed and hopefully will be for them, and for others out there to understand- We all have a power within ourselves to overcome. It may not feel like it at the time, but in a world of positive thinking and the love of family and friends we can prevail.   I want to do my part by giving to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, portions of my sales. I am not asking for fame, fortune or to become a celebrity.  I am asking all of you for your help to aid me in getting the word out, about my story that is true, and has a Soulful Meaning – Helping others.  I want people in our entire world and our military members to understand, EVERYONE has a purpose, EVERYONE has a  meaning, and to my military family - You fought for our freedom and people care. My husband was in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. It has been only since my book has come out, that he is slowing sharing what he went through.  I myself have never served on the front lines; I never stood in front of the enemy that had me locked in his sights, yet if I did all this emotional destruction to myself because of cancer, imagine what they must be going through. This world needs to change. To quote Mr. Michael Jackson "I'm looking at the man in the Mirror - It's time to make that change."  I do appreciate your taking the time to read my words and to listen to why I woke up, but why my heart now aches.  So now I must ask you two questions. What will it take for you to wake up, if you need to?  What will it take to change you, if you need changing? God Bless - BU3 Retired Stacey L. Bolin
