Is it Iegal to take the Cat's Valium? It's going to be one of those days. (A Lost Soul - FOUND?)

Part One

The thought of picking up everything and moving once again, without the assistance of the military, has to be the most stressful processes in my life thus far. Most of my stress lately has been due to a self-prescribed medication - FOOD, which now has my ass looking like I've stolen two seeded watermelons and stuffed them in my back pockets and my thighs have literally rubbed a hole in my jeans. So here I am, two weeks from D-Day (going to the closing to sell our home), one would think I'd be happy, excited, rejoicing that another crazy adventure awaits me. Right now - my biggest worry is that the land fish out west won't taste like the blue crabs do here in Annapolis, Maryland.  Clearly my priorities are like an end of the school year binder that is stuffed full of papers, and gets knocked to the floor scattering everything everywhere with no hopes of being put back in order for about six months - if ever.
Now, there are times when I'm feeling low and even the best McDonalds McMuffin and hash brown combo can't stop my brain from wanting to think about negative things in my head over and over again such as i.e., - "How does one get excited for something without having the information about where I'm going. I'm selling what I've known for 22 years to move to an area without a home, without a job, without placement, something to call our own. That the years of blood, sweat and tears, will be enjoyed by another family living here, and my hopes to see my grandchild walk through this door in the future will never be."
Now I know I've keep you on hold...so let me go back to two weeks ago when I made numerous, pivotal, and shocking discoveries about myself...You see something happened on that 9 hour drive when I started thinking, and thinking meaning - my pathetic self-induced pity party. As I trudged onward driving 95 north to New Hampshire on May 9th, 2016, it was a bitter sweet ride. I was going to fly, but my lost soul was in dire needed of a feeling that my heart couldn't find. Immediately as my radio played songs of the 80's & 90's - that are now considered classic music - I was teleported into a journey of nostalgia. My eyes peered upon the flooding of memories in my mind of places my family and I have seen and had been too. Still vivid in my thoughts - the expressions on the faces of my sons seeing the buildings of New York City rise above the horizon as we crossed the George Washington Bridge, the fun that we had while basking on the beaches in the summer suns of the coastal waters of Maine, to the snowy icy roads lined with homes decorated with color lights as we traveled on our way to surprise my mother for Christmas.
So many memories and great times were had during all the long drives years before. Most of which were with my boys, from infants to grown men. Occasional we'd be accompanied with my husband, but only if he didn't have to work. I could always see the disappointment in the eyes of my boys when daddy stay behind, but I wouldn't let it get them down and would do all I could to keep smiles upon their faces while putting myself last. Funny how people have a way of putting their selves last to ensure the happiness of others. I hold a master’s degree in this - shhhhh don't tell anyone I admitted it.  I never understood this concept while raising my kids, why was I so unhappy? I always felt like I was on the back burner and used to blame friends and family for this feeling – as if people intentionally excluded me from their lives. Some did, but the lie I told myself was it was everyone. As I continued to drive, I tried to understand the hurt in my heart, what was it that I was searching for, what was really wrong and why did I feel a sense of remorse -  and then it hit me.  As I drove  slowly though the town of Hillsboro, NH where my military journey began, I decided to stop. There I said in amazement as if it were a dream.  To look at the home where my mother lived before I went into the Navy Seabees, began filling me with a strange but comforting new found realization that I had nobody to blame but myself - I allowed my beliefs of the past to take over my life. One by one the answers of why - revealed themselves.

Mom's Apts. Top floor and bottom floor many years ago.

As I sat looking at my mothers old apartment building I could see back into my life and how I had become frightened by the horrors and triggers of a sexual assault in 1991 that made me feel dirty, unloved, unwanted, that even my husband had never been told about, were slowly chipping away the walls of a suppressed memory - thus causing endless fear and my want to run away, but not understanding why.
I remember my promise to God, that if he gave me life after my cancer - I would do all I could to see to other people's happiness no matter what I had to give up - including my own happiness.
How I felt I was no longer beautiful, especially when the doctors had to remove ample amounts of scar tissue caused by radiation therapy, from both breasts, that significantly reduced me to from a triple D to a comfortable C - pleasing me that I still got to keep something - but felt a sense of guilt that I had somehow let my husband down.
The icing on the cake of crazy beliefs that I created was iced in June 2012 when I finally remember the assault - I punished myself repeatedly by believing that I was the reason a man had raped me, while at the same time was so confused by this thinking as I knew I had done nothing wrong, but convinced myself it was all my fault.
Day by day I allowed myself to slip into what I call the "Hollow Bunny Syndrome" - You look solid on the outside, but its a huge disappointed when you take a bite and its dark and empty inside.  Crazy hua? Sad is more like it. Yes there had been times in years past that I had pondered suicide - there I said it. But the two faces of miracles that doctors said I couldn't have - my sons - are what kept me alive inside and out to this very day.

***

On the horizon as I reached for my - I tell myself it's diet Mountain Dew,  An overwhelming epiphany was peaking as my travels were just about over.  I crested a hill on I-93 at 3:45pm about 300 feet from my exit to route 106 Bristol/Meredith. I immediately needed to pull over. I felt shaky as I starred out over the mountainous tree covered landscape when light dawned on me -  I was home. Consumed with emotion from what felt like I had just finished reading the book of a life time - I dropped my head in my hands and I wept for so many defining moments that in years passed I fought away the tears to create the illusion that my structure was strong and unbreakable. An Oscar winning moment - to bad it was real and not just a movie.
I wept for the young little girl that I was and the people who have since passed away that were important in my life. For the woman I couldn't be because I was so consumed with hate for letting myself believe I was at fault for being assaulted. For the woman who loves and is still in love with a man that promised to never hurt her, but at times - does and doesn't understand words destroy and broken hearts can only be mended so many times.  For the woman I want to be and most importantly - for the lost soul within me that I needed to find. Yet I'm tormented with a life changing question that demands an answer - Will I find my lost soul in such a short amount of time in New Hampshire? I could only hope and pray as I had to be back in Maryland on Friday of that same week for a doctor’s appointment.
I've seen many miracles - And one was preparing to stand before me - but would I be ready? To be continued...

Could the Truth be the Downfall of Happiness?

Could the Truth be the Downfall of Happiness?

Music inspiration for this story:

At a very juvenile age, my mother taught me a very important lesson of life, and that the only person I had to blame at the time for the problems that arose, were three people - me, myself, and I.  I believe I was the age of 8 and my brother was 4. We had a friend who lived just one house up from us and across the street. He was one of the local neighborhood boys, maybe only 7 in age, that I don't know, but I will always remember his name was Jimmy. He would come down to our house and we would have a blast playing day long games of Cowboys and Indians that at the end of every day we would fantasize riding off on our imaginary horses named Starlight and Silver into a New Hampshire sunset across our ten acres of land.

What does this have to do with the title of this blog "Could the truth be the downfall of happiness?"  Well, it was at this specific time in my life, that I made a premeditated choice to do something that I knew would not be met with rainbow colored ponies and glitter - but the outcome would impact me for eternity.

My neighbor and I were having fun galloping around the house, to capture my brother who would always play the Indian with no pony of his own. My brother sprang out from behind a large cinderblock barbeque my dad, had for years, been trying to keep from crumbling. When my brother did this, he did not comprehend how close the neighborhood boy was to his location, causing them to collide that resulted in my little brother falling against the edge of the Barbeque. Now we all know at that young of an age, any type of fall, whether a good fall or an accident would result in an ample amount of tears and mom would come running to check on baby brother. (Ok here’s an honest statement that I’ve kept to myself for years - yes I will say that at my age then, I always felt she worried about him more than me and yes I would get jealous.)  My brother was fine, it was just a simple accident and resulted in a mere bump to the forehead. Jimmy had also fallen into the barbeque, without any bump or scratches appearing.

Now back in 1970’s parents on our road were notorious for contacting the other parents of the community to notify them if their children were in trouble, had gotten into trouble - or worse - had gotten hurt or were missing. Being 8, I never gave that notion any consideration when I had gone to Jimmy's house for lunch the next day. Still stewing over the situation and under the delusion that mom loved my brother more than me fueled my mouth. When I arrived at Jimmy's home, I was met with a kind hello from his mother who was in the kitchen making a glorious lunch of PB & J, apple juice and chips. What 8 year old would pass up lunch made with these three kid style food groups? NOT ME! As we sat at the table, Jimmy's mom kindly asked how my brother was doing. It was this inquiry that I walked right through the gates of Hell knowing perfectly well what I was about to do. I responded with the lie of lies - and not a slap on the hand don't do it again type of lie - this one was the mother of mothers and life would change for me the instant his mother got off the phone after confirming what I had said was true or not and that maybe my mother had not given all the information about the accident in the backyard.

When Jimmy's mom hung up the phone, she remarked that I had to go home at that very moment.

"Why would I have to go home? I just got here and haven't even finished my sandwich?" I thought to myself, "But I knew the truth I was about to face the music and mom's anguish about the one thing she hated the most - LIARS!"

My house wasn't even an 8th of a mile from where I was and most days I could be home in 45 seconds if I put myself into my galloping horse mode. In my whole life as a kid on White Oaks Road, this was the only day that I did my best to make this brief walk, drag out - only to be met in the front yard by my mother and her rage screaming for all to hear - "GO TO YOUR ROOM AND STAY THERE! YOU’RE GROUNDED!"  My mother always stood by what she said and meant every word of it.

Ok, I'm hearing you now - "What did I say that pissed my mom off into a medusa mode?" Mind you, before I divulge what I said, I was 8, but I knew perfectly well what I was saying and why. So when somebody says to you, "I don't know why I lied," when you ask them a question about something they have said and/or have done especially when you have the facts - THAT IS NO EXCUSE - They know perfectly well why they said or did what they did  and lied! (Ok, quick vent, breathing….better now.)

I had told Jimmy's mother that he had knocked out my brothers two front teeth when he ran into him. I could feel the lightning bolts of death crackling above my head as soon as the word absconded from my mouth. I knew it was only a matter of time before I would obtain the ass warming of a life time, but never in my wildest imagination did I ever think that my mother had it in her to punish me for the length of time she did.  And the statement – “I can take your birthday away from you - just watch me!” Yes my friends she had that power do such a thing and even as I continued to walk this great earth, I had never felt so alone and that to some, running away would have been the solution to escape being lonely.

It was the month of August, my birthday month. There had been plans made for a big birthday party with all my friends, daily trips to the Weirs Beach to go swimming and play on the swings and the biggest event - the circus was coming to town for the very first time. I'll give you one guess who didn't get to take part in any of these big plans and that my birthday party had been reduced to just family members.

Mom had held me accountable for my recurrent little white lies that garnished my stories before the big "Tooth" lie. This time my punishment consisted of more than the typical norm that was usually no TV, no bike riding for a day and once we tried the great taste of Irish Spring soap. However with my friends and their parents labeling me with the reputation of being a chronic liar, Mom took matters into her own hands, which started with a classic case of major red ass – And I certainly was not used to the newest form of punishment implemented that summer. I learned at a young age that I'd never survive in prison after being confined to my room for a month, only to come out to eat, use the bathroom, and answer the phone. In addition to my child style Folsom Prison blues, no friends could call or come over and As for TV - when school started in September, I was clueless to the new television scheduled line up of my favorite shows like the Brady Bunch, The Flintstone’s, Looney Toon's, and Gilligan’s Island.
(The oddity about my punishment being referenced as my child style Folsom Prison Blues is because while I was serving my time, and my mother was in the kitchen listening to her AM radio - It was the first time I had ever heard Johnny Cash sing Folsom Prison Blues. Ironic hua?  I'm not kidding when I say I have a life soundtrack and can be teleported back to that very time when I hear the songs that musically appeared during significant times in my life.)

To an adult getting this type of punishment, the attitude would be like - so what if you miss a few TV shows and don’t get to go out with friends when you’d like, but being an 8 year old and it’s summer vacation – it was a death sentence. I wrote many letters of my intent to run away, and how much I hated my mother and that she didn’t love me. However, after each closing of my runaway letters, I would sign it – Love Stacey, and I would realize what I had to lose.

I didn’t hate my mother, I hated that I wasn’t getting my way or getting away with a behavior that if I continued – would hurt me throughout my life. It was then – my lesson was learn and I promised myself that I never wanted to feel so isolated again that people lose trust in a  person who lies or tell tall tales. I lost several friends and several opportunities to have fun that summer. That is why I speak the honest truth or keep my mouth shut, I do not lie, as I have nothing to gain except a life of stress, and what I like about traveling the road of honesty – the freedom of not having to remember which lie I’ve told and then having to cover up one after another. There is numerous ways to be honest without being harsh and hurtful.

Now my mother had always said, one day you will have yours coming, and you’ll know just precisely when someone is lying to you like you have done to me and Jimmy’s mom. She was right and I see it as her legacy, a permanent lifelong lesson, and curse all at the same time.  Note to self – Lesson learned – The Truth Will Set You FREE!

Flashing forward to this day: I have another problem to solve:  Getting my family to understand there is a liar among us – and it isn’t me. My younger son fell victim to this over the summer, but soon the truth about statements I had been making about a person’s behavior were actually ones of truth and the person they were about – finally confessed. I felt vindicated, but at the same time I could see the disappointment in my sons face, as he honestly believed I was the liar, but the lies were the defense of another to protect themselves from wrong doings being exposed. I’d like to think that my younger son sees the real person I am in a whole different light. But as for my oldest – he will only see the truth when he is ready and not a moment sooner. Until then I can only smile and do my best to stay happy, and believe one day these truths I tell will be discovered to be honest and will finally set his anger free.

"Less Is More" - Stay Positive My Friends

My roses are in full bloom today...

and how beautiful they smell

As I was surfing my afternoon wall posts today, I read a quote that was put on as a Facebook status from a woman I used to go to school with. All morning long I had struggled with what today's writing would be all about. Would it be one of my soapbox mornings? A non-fictional story? A mystery? A recipe? All of the pondering and reaching to find something to write, went away when I read her posted words. She writes that she saw this and thought is was a great message to share - I can't agree more.  Thanks Marcia you have inspired me. And so, today's message is: "Less is More" Have a great day everyone and I'll blog you later.

.

Be happy with who you are now, and let your positivity inspire your journey into tomorrow. Everything that happens in life is neither good nor bad. It just depends on your perspective. And no matter how it turns out, it always ends up just the way it should. Either you succeed or you learn something. So stay positive, appreciate the pleasant outcomes, and learn from the rest. Your positivity will help encourage those around you.- Positive Thoughts

"The Experiment" The Final Saga

"The Experiment"
The Final Saga
By BU3 Ret. Stacey L. Bolin

Numerous onlookers began to crowd the area where the commotion was coming from, making it more and more difficult for Bill to see what was happening.

“Lori, you stay here, I want to see what’s going on.”
“Bill, I think you should just stay put until security gets here.”
“I’ll be fine, just wait here.”
As he walked closer to the counter, he could make out the topic that had grown into an extremely heated confrontation that was filled with a multitude of profanity that could have woven a rope to the moon and back – twice. From what he could gather the young lady working the counter had friended a guy on Facebook that was in a relationship with another young lady and it was that young lady that had shown up to express her dislikes about the newly established friendship. Bill was amazed, how could someone out of the blue be so confrontational without realizing the possible consequences of this type of behavior in such a public establishment. It’s one thing to have an argument within the walls of your own home, but to be so brazen as to come to a person’s place of work and flip out all because another girl had friended her boyfriend. It was a clear indication, that not only did he need to add another column to his experiment, but his point about social skills and how they were lacking more and more in the world, was becoming more evident since technology had found its place in life’s society.
Back and forth the two ladies argued about the accusations. It wasn’t until the young lady behind the counter pulled out her IPhone from her back pocket and proved her innocence, that she had not been the one who had friended anyone, in fact it was just the opposite. It had been the boyfriend who had been doing the friending, but when his girlfriend found out, and he denied what he had done, all hell broke loose.
The managers of the food counter where the confrontation took place were able to quickly dissolve the problem and get the crowd to disburse, but it didn’t come without consequences. Bill did his best to get closer to the conversation that was now taking place between the managers and the employee. He was shocked by what happened next.
The managers were explaining their policy that all cell phones, camera’s, IPod’s and anything else that was personal technology, was to be off and stowed away in an employee locker. That the employee had gone against the contact that they had signed stating they understood this policy and a first offense was the only offense, even if the phone was off, but because she had a cell phone in her possession while on the job, she had broken the policy that resulted in her immediate dismissal.
“THAT’S NOT FAIR! SHE CAME AT ME AND I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG!” the employee screamed for all to hear. “This place is a joke!” and then went storming off.
Bill looked over his should at Lori.
“What’s going on?” Lori mouthed to him trying to get some inclination as to what was taking place, while in her mind she made a mental note to herself - make sure her daughters didn’t work at the mall. “Come back here.”
Bill went back over to the table to fill Lori in on what had transpired, but with Bill, she knew that the story was going to be told his way.
“So, what happened?” questioned Lori.
“It seems that there was quite the riff in bedrock. Wilma believed that Betty had been trying to pursue her man and friended him on the marble table, but when Wilma confronted Fred about this, Fred beat feet and took off to the gravel pit, never telling Wilma that he was the one doing the friending, so Wilma marched over to Betty’s with plans to have Dino attack her, but instead Wilma got to walk away Scott free and Betty lost her job at the brontosaurus burger.
“I know I’m going to regret this, but Bill, for some crazy ass reason I understood what you just said even if though you explained the situation as if I had just turned on the Flintstones, so either I am tried or my brain is fried, or it’s late and we need some closure on this experiment of yours - soon. Do you have everything you’re looking for?”
“Yes, I think I do, let’s go home and share our findings with our girls.”
“I hope you don’t mean tonight?” Lori exclaimed.
“Sure why not?”
“Because it’s late, I’m bloated from all the soda and fattening foods I have been eating for the past two hours and now I feel like the a Macy’s Day Balloon. The only thing that is missing is the right amount of rope and handlers to guide me back to the car. I’m also very tired, and on the verge of turning into - Oscar the Grouch. I think that is enough explaining…don’t make me go Mr. Slate on you.”
replied Bill in his best John Wayne voice “Ok, little lady you win this time, let’s fire up our gas pony and go back to the homestead.”
They got all their papers together and headed out the door. It was time to call it a night.
Bill wore a huge smile as he drove home. He was proud to know that he had done what he had set out to do. He had gathered enough information to sit down with his family and explain some life issues that were troubling him. He knew that with the way he had set his idea in motion and documented his findings, this would help him, help them understand his concern about the future not just for his daughters, but for society as a whole.

***
When Lori and Bill pulled into the yard, they were amazed by the number of lights that were on in the house.
“I figured the girls would already be in their rooms, doing whatever it is teenage girls do behind closed doors.”
“Are you kidding, they were going to wait this night out until we walk through that door. Wanna bet?” Lori said trying to smile over a yawn.
When they walked through the door, there sat their dog scooter with his dish in his mouth, to greet them.
“Doesn’t anyone but me, feed the dog in this house?” Bill called out in a witty voice.
Both girls came thundering down the stairs wearing looks of great concern.
“Did you hear what happened?” shouted Carmen, “It’s all over Facebook and Twitter!”
Bill and Lori looked at one another and then looked back at Carmen before Bill nonchalantly replied, “Depends on what you’re talking about.
“It’s not that big a deal,” said Nancy, trying to hold back her excitement, “Just some bitch got my best friend fired from her job because of something the bitch’s boyfriend did.”
“She isn’t a bitch Nancy! That girl got what was coming to her for trying to make a move on another girl’s boyfriend. What a slut!”
Lori shook her head in frustration with each cuss word that fell from her daughters lips and finally interjected, “How about we refrain from the negative name calling shall we girls?”
“You know, since the girls are so wide awake, how about you go upstairs and get some sleep. I think for me, this is a good a time as any to share with them what I learned tonight. I’d almost say that it’s perfect timing, wouldn’t you?”
“I guess I would agree if I only know what is was you were trying to find out.” Lori remarked while trying not to yawn, “But as much as I would love to know, I’m going to leave the long talks into the night, to the three of you. You can fill me in during breakfast. Oh and one other thing please make sure that Scooter here gets something to eat and a trip outside to relieve himself.”
“Sure thing mom,” both girls replied in unison.
“Good night sweetness,” bill said as he gave her a hug and a kiss on the lips, “I love you – sweet dreams.”
“I love you all too.”
As Lori made her way up the stairs, a great sense of guilt had overwhelmed her. She felt that she should be downstairs, but at the same time, her husband needed this time to be alone and to share with his daughters what has been on his mind all week long. That maybe he’d be more open if she was not in the room. She decided that she would not reveal that she had taken a place on the top of the stairs and leaned against the wall to hear what Bill and the girls were talking about.
You could hear the girls walking around putting chips, soda, and plates, on the table while Bill opened a can of dog food for scooter, before they all gathered around the table. He put all his papers and notes together so that as he spoke, he would be able to provide any documentation to possibly answer any questions that his daughters might ask him.
They finally all sat down and Bill began to speak.
“Well girls, I won’t say that this hasn’t been uneventful evening. It’s been anything but. As for the event that took place at the Mall, I saw what happened and I know the outcome.”
“This girl just…”
“Carmen, I said I know what happened and you don’t have all the facts.”
“Yes I do, my friends on Facebook…”
Bill immediately cut her off, “Carmen! Stop and listen to me, you need to learn to listen. You also need to learn that just because you see it posted on Facebook, it is not always so.
“Dad, my friends were there, they saw it all.” She remarked in her bad attitude tone of voice.
“Really now, so your friends also saw that the girl at the food counter got fired for not following company policy about keeping her cell phone in her locker during working hours?”
“Whatever?” She replied with a huge roll of her eyes.
“That’s right; she wasn’t fired for standing up for herself verbally. She was fired for having her cell phone in her back pocket.”
Carmen and Nancy were rendered speechless.
“See what I mean about having the facts and having the right facts. It’s very important to understand that in this day and age people can put anything they want on a computer, factual or not. I worry that with everyone connected through technology we are losing life’s simpler moments, or what the youth of today would like to label as the old fashion ways, you know like writing a letter and mailing it with a stamp, or stopping by someone’s house and sitting together on the porch sipping some fine sweet tea and catching up on old times and new or better yet, being able to express yourselves through differences of opinion by sitting down together and having a one on one face to face conversation so that everyone can move forward and move past what might be bothering them. People don’t do that as much anymore and I beginning to think that I was the reason why my own daughters don’t appreciate simple living vs. life via the computer – I never educated you on what a simple lifestyle was like when I was growing up. I just figured that if I let you get this phone and that computer, you’d know what you were missing, but then I realized that how would you know what you’re missing if I don’t teach you these things and share my memories. Believe it or not, when I had to write a book report, I had to use a pen and write in cursive on a piece of essay paper,” both girls laughed, “You laugh now, but it’s true. Nancy when was the last time your pen wrote in your notebook?”
“I don’t Dad; I used my notepad computer and a dragon program to put my thought in order.”
“There’s point number one that I am trying to make. You are the generation of technology. Years ago, we would have never had believed that now you can speak out loud and a thing called a computer would type everything you say and correct the spelling and grammar as you went along. We had to know how to spell and do math in our heads. No you have computers and fancy calculators at the ready to do all your work.”
“Wow, I guess I never realized how so much as changed over the years. Dad, I’d love to see some pictures of what things were like when you were a young boy and want to know more about what you and your friends did.”
Bill smiled and was beaming with great joy as Lori sit sat at the top of the stairs and was doing her best to hold back her heartfelt tears.
“Sure Nancy, I’d love to share that with you and with Carmen. I also wanted to share with you what my experiment was all about.
“How to elude the police when you’re not being chased,” Nancy said with a big cheesy grin.
“Ha-ha but no. I wanted to see how many young men and ladies in their late teens and early twenties were hooked on some form of technology and how much or how little social skills they had. What I discovered was alarming. For example; even though your friend was fired for having her cell phone in her back pocket. Five other’s at that same work location had their phones or IPhones with them as well. A couple of them had them hidden in various locations and I would catch those willing to take a risk on getting caught, by taking quick glances at them over the course of two hours. But don’t think I am just picking on that one location, I observed this problem in all the locations, and generally it was the women who were guilty of this. As for the men, they were more into flirting when a nice looking lady walked by or ordered at their food location and would even go as far as making a taster tray, just so they could get out from behind the counter and get closer to the ladies doing their shopping and getting a bite to eat. Some were radicals as they tried to gain the attention of the opposite sex, while others were more the secret squirrel types.”
Carmen began to laugh, “You mean like you dad?”
“Sure, like me.” He grinned.
You could see a light was beginning to shine over Nancy’s head as she paused a moment and then said, “so what you’re trying to say dad, is that your feeling guilty that maybe we don’t have the social skills that you wish the world used to have, because we can’t live without our computers and I-something’s?”
Bill dropped his head and softly replied, “Yes girls, I have felt like I have let you down for a long time and that I can’t get back the time that I have lost.”
“Dad, the past is the past, you can’t go back to it and you can’t live a life of would a, could a, should a’s. It will drive you crazy. We just through since you didn’t really get mad at us for using our phones and computer all the time, then you were OK with it.”
“Nancy, how’d you get so smart?”
“I don’t know, maybe because I study and get good grades in school” she replied as she through a look at her sister as if her commented was intended to hurt her.
“So all writing, and making columns, and going to the mall to conduct an experiment, this was all because you were trying to find a way to help us appreciate life before and after technology and how people need to learn to socialize face to face vs. via the Internet?”
“Yes, I guess you could say it that way. I just miss the days of sitting down at a table, like we are doing now, and sharing thoughts and ideas as a family or if you’re with friends. I never see any of your gal pals over here much to just hang out with you both.”
“That’s because we are on Facebook and all chat at the same time, vs. all the girls coming over here, because then we would have to feed them and like mom said, if we can’t remember to feed scooter, how could we remember to feed our guests.” Carmen winked.
“Wow, I guess I should have given you both more credit that you are more aware of life and its importance.  I am so glad that you both took the time to get away from your worlds behind your bedroom doors to talk with me tonight. I really feel better.”
“I have a great idea Dad, how about we plan to do this after dinner every day. We’ll sit and talk and catch each other up on what we each did that day, and who knows, maybe Carmen will realize she can live 8 hours without her phone on her hip, so that she could secure some type of employment. Hey Carmen, I hear there a job opening at the Mall.”
“NO!” Screamed Lori still perched at the top of the stairs.
“Wow, mom’s still up, guess that means she heard everything. So I guess it’s time to call it a night. Both of you come over here and give me a hug good night.”
Both girls got up and wrapped their arms around Bill and told them how grateful they were to have him as their dad and how much he really had taught them, even if he felt he had let them down. To them their dad and done everything in their lives, but let them down. That Bill and Lori were great parents and they were happy to have them to teach them the facts of life and preparing for the future.

“Ok, let’s hit the hay, tomorrows another day and it’s getting here fast.”
Bill and the girls put things away and turned off the light downstairs. How surprised they were when they came up the stairs and found Lori sound asleep at the top of them. Bill hugged the girls once again before they went into their rooms and closed the doors. Bill knelt down and whispered into Lori’s ear.
“Hey sweetness, let’s go to bed.”
She held out her hand and with both their efforts she stood up and they both went into the bedroom to call it a night.

As the house was quite once again you could hear just the sounds of the over sized clock on the living room wall, ticking the evening hours away while outside in the upstairs hallway centered a perfect distance between all three bedrooms sat scooter ever so quietly with his dog dish in his mouth.

This is what was in my head as I was typing the segment when the character Bill was referring to the Flintstones. Enjoy

YOUR NEVER TO OLD FOR SURPRISES

To write this story, I was inspired by the following music. If played, I hope that you will feel what I am feeling and how much this story means to me.
The Cake I made
 my honey this year.
"The Devils Black Forest Cake"
Now it is no secret that for many souls in the world, the thought of their birthday is worrisome. Why? I don't why, but I can speak for one person...myself.  For me, more than twenty years ago, my birthdays were something that I looked forward to, but then when the day came and ended it was like a significant loss. To me it was a loss of another year gone by. It was another year closer to old age and it was another year closer to my day of passing on. I was always sad when my birthday would fade into an evening sky to give birth to another day. Every birthday before my cancer, I would cry myself to sleep. I should have been grateful all those years and for my gift of life. It wasn't until I was diagnoses with stage 2A Hodgkin’s disease in May of 1992, that my perspective on my birthdays had changed. No more crying for the loss of another year. It was a time to celebrate another year that I had gotten to live in this mixed up wild and crazy adventure called life. I chose to embrace the gifts that I've been given and to love with every ounce of my heart and my soul.

For my husband, a dark time had fallen upon him when he began struggling within when it came time for his 40th birthday to come calling. For many this is a time in life that becomes a struggle that we all will probably face or maybe have already faced. The worst that many friends have told me, they feared the dreaded label of being called – Over the hill. That those words "Over the Hill" have this impact on the way one see that their life span is half over, well unless you live past 80 years of age. You start to wonder if the choices you have made in your life were the right ones. Some even face their own mental "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda," thoughts.

On my husbands 40th birthday, I wanted to do what I could to help him get past the thoughts that were wearing him down about growing old. It was on that day that I knew he needed to experience his past and what better way, then bringing an old military friend back into his life.  Someone who had the connection to a time in his life when my guy was without responsibilities or worries. A time when a single man could experience life and the joys within it and know he is only responsible for himself and the choices he makes. I believe in the saying, you have to love yourself before you can love anything else. People at one point or another will have their moment when they question who they are, what they are doing, and where they are in their life. I had planned a huge surprise party with over 50 of his closest friends and family members. my husband was unaware of what was being  planned. I decided that the biggest surprise, his long lost friend from 18 years ago would be a fantastic way to start the weekend off and so they arrived on the Friday to attend Saturday nights party. But the arrival of his long lost friend would be an early surprise and he arrived that Friday night.

I wish you could have all seen the look on his face when he opened the door and their stood his friend Fred. I was so happy that they arrived a day early, driving all the way from Michigan in the worst snow storm that fell upon the east coast in 2010.  It was great that he and his family could spend more time with his long lost friend. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room from any of us on that cold and snowy Friday evening. It was as if life had come full circle.  I was lost in the moment. There I stood, watching two men reconnect as if it had only been a day since they last had seen each other. To see my husband so filled with joy and happiness humbled me in so many ways. To see his smiles, that had been trapped away and would only come to the surface now and again, were free. I wanted to bottle this moment so that every year we could open it up and feel this love and joy all over again and again.  Since that birthday a few years ago, we have created a new tradition. It is called birthday hell week.

What it entails, is during the week of our birthdays, we surprise the birthday boy or girl, man or woman in our home by implementing but not limiting ourselves to various secret activites such as, playing jokes, decorate rooms, giving special gifts, cards, and streamer cars/trucks over the course of one week. On the actual birthday, we have a dinner that is chose by the birthday person. It could be dinner out or a nice dinner home, followed by homemade birthday cake, ice cream and being surrounded by friends and family. Sometimes the gatherings are big, and sometimes small. Either way, it is a celebration to share with the birthday person, and a special way to show them how much we appreciate them and how much we love them in our lives.

Since that 40th birthday, my boys and I have continued with our tradition and new way to celebrate our joy and happiness that my husband was brought into this world. He is a kind soul, with a very large and giving heart. Often times he has even sacrificed his own happiness to please others. He is a father that I could only wish that I had in my life. He is gentle and kind and honestly cares about others - as long as you do him no harm. He is our angel on earth and I can only pray as his wife that I am blessed with celebrating many birthdays with him. Below is a video of the final surprise that we gave him for this year’s birthday hell week. (His friends had not shown up yet, he was just getting home from work) The reason we did this for him is because he had mentioned that he didn't recall ever having a birthday that was a themed party when he was a child. He remembers having friends over and staying overnight, but never the extreme of matching decorations and even a pinata. So we decided to give him a "Hot Wheels" party. We even had party favors. Everyone got their own wet and wear "Hot Wheels" tattoos. This was his response when he came home on his birthday and the room was decorated. It was great to see that smile. We love you Dad. Happy Birthday sweetie and many many more. All my love to you - Stacey

The Dress of Inspiration

something about the holidays that makes me happy and then build from there. He also emphasized the importance of thinking more on a positive level again and things would turn around. My husband and I and our two boys had our very first Christmas party. I told myself that this would be the beginning of something great. We had a house full of guests, food and fun and it was just what the doctor had ordered, but it still wasn't quite enough. I needed one more thing to get me motivated to stay on task and get myself out of this mental and physical slump once and for all and I knew just want would be my inspiration to accomplish this life changing goal.  For the past 5 years I have kept a very modern black and white dress that I bought at Macy's, that has only see the light of day three times, captive in my closet.  It is in pristine condition and still had the original price tag on it. It didn't fit me when I bought it, but I told myself I would not remove its tag until I could fit in it.
It has been a whole year and I think I can honestly say to myself "You've come a long way baby."  This Saturday we are having our second Christmas party and I get so excited to hear that people are looking forward to it. But this year the party will be a bit different as only half of me will be there.  Over the past year I have found peace with myself and my food additions. I have gone from a size 26 to a size 14 and have a whole new found way of looking and thinking about life. I had taken and continue to take a back street away from stress and worry and I stay focused on my family and our health. Yet something wonderful happened to me today that was the icing on the cake. The dress that had been held captive in my closet for the past 5 years, which I could only dream of wearing, found its way into the light of day. My goal was to lose the weight, get into a better frame of mind, be the best wife and mother I can be and if I did these things, my gift to myself would be that I could fit nicely into my dress for the Christmas party this year. I sit here with a huge smile on face - I got what I wanted for Christmas.

The Golden Snowflake - A True Story

To know me, is to know, when I get down in the dumps, it's the feeling of Christmas and its musical splendor that brings life to my soul. These past few days I have been doing something I despise the most - Cleaning my basement of clutter that has been jockied from the family room to the garage and back again over the course of 17 years. Ouch, yes, that is a long time. So my younger son, realizing what it is that can bring his mother back from the depths of bitchiness, he found "The Christmas Story" (Yes the one with the Red Rider BB Gun), he put in on the big screen TV and before I knew it I was attacking the mounds of boxes and bagged clutter once and for all. (Pictures to be posted later).  So being in that pre and way to early to think of Christmas mode, I thought of this story and wanted to share it with you. I do hope you enjoy it. So let me be the first to say...(with a big smile) Merry Christmas.

"The Golden Snowflake"

December 2008

As I spent my holidays running to and from and here to there, I always had one thing on my mind...finding friends and family the perfect Christmas gift. Yet, the mission of this quest, deemed harder than one would think. As I shopped and searched I had found gifts for friends and loved ones and felt at ease that my shopping was done - well almost. I had two special people remaining. Christmas had come and gone and I felt bad that it had taken me so long to find a gift, but it didn’t matter Christmas or not, I still pondered what could I give that would be special and be like me, uniquely different, (smile).
Well, I began to think back on all the special places that this special couple had shown me through pictures, conversation and even places that they had told us about, and my family went to see such as: Gettysburg, the Apply Festival in Pennsylvania and the Candle Light service at their church. But, there was one place that had been suggested, The Homestead Gardens and its lights and train display, they insisted that it was a must see, but failing to make the time in my schedule, I didn’t get there during the holiday season. I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason. One Wednesday night after Christmas my family and I took the kids to the skate zone in Odenton, Maryland and then to the Pizza Hut in Bowie.
For whatever the reason, we didn’t come home on our normal route, this time we took route 214 instead of route 50 east. As we drove the dark and windy road and enjoyed the Christmas lights displayed in the yards of unknown families, our eyes were graced with the utmost beauty that I believe we were all anxiously looking for. The Homestead Gardens was decorated in this magical display of Christmas lights in a multitude of color. We had to stop to see this glorious holiday splendor in person. When I walked through the doors, I felt like a kid again, yet much to my hearts desire, I was striken with deep disappointment when I saw that the shelves were only filled with remnants of what was once a gorgeous display of ornaments and holiday decorations.
Although myself, and yes, my family was very disappointed with this used to be Christmas utopia’s baron shelves, I remember thinking to myself that “we just had to find the train display”. We all ran around the building as if we were looking for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or better yet, a crazy game of hide-and-go seek with no place to hide.  Then suddenly...there it was, miniature towns of yesteryear accented with my most favorite item that all Christmas holidays should have, even if only once, PILES OF HAVE TO HAVE SNOW. My heart smiled as I could hear my friends saying “Stacey, you have to see the train display at the Homestead, it’s just beautiful.” As I took in the beauty of the display, there lying on the snow, were five intricate designs of what looked like golden sparkled caramelized snowflakes.
I knew it then I had found the perfect gift for two special people. A gift that symbolized my love for Christmas, snow, snowflakes and that the special gift that they had given to me and my family - The gift of and unconditional friendship. Because of their many travel adventures and sharing those trips with us through pictures and conversations, my family and I have also gotten to experience some of the beauty of the world outside of our town and I can only hope we will see many more places in person. When I gave them their gift, I shared this story of where I found my special gift and hoped they would accept my gift and always remember each time our snowflakes find their way to our trees, we can rejoice in knowing God had brought us together and the bond of friendship will last forever.
